How to Photograph Smoke – Step By Step Tutorial

Today's article from Picture Correct is by Jay from J.Hoque Photography (www.jhoque.com) a London based Portrait and Asian Wedding Photographer covering all types of Asian Wedding Photography.

Smoke photography can be extremely frustrating yet fulfilling at the same time. It all depends on how you approach the subject. If you have spare time and/or stuck indoors on a rainy day, then it’s the perfect opportunity to try this technique. There is no need for expensive camera equipment. Just your camera, flash and a few household products will do the job.

All you need is a basic understanding of the relationship between the subject, lighting and background. The one vital ingredient that I would say is a must is PATIENCE! Oh, and a camera of course… Without those two things, you will walk away very stressed.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH3 Review

Today we look at a review of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH3 from Digital Photography School, by Barrie Smith is an experienced writer/photographer currently published in Australian Macworld, Auscam and other magazines in Australia and overseas.

For whatever reason it was a long wait for the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH3 — I counted about six months.

Worth waiting for?

Yes, for a number of reasons, not all directly to do with image making either.

As a MILC (mirrorless interchangeable lens camera) this is as fully featured as you can get and then offers more in the rugged department: it has a magnesium alloy, full diecast body, coupled with splash and dustproof construction, achieved by tightly sealing sections of the camera body.

Test lens was the Lumix G Vario Power OIS f2.8/12-35mm, equating to a 24-70mm lens in a 35 SLR.

Finding and Wooing Your Photography Audience

Today's article from Picture Correct shows you how to build an audience for your work. It is written by Irene Martinelli, a digital photographer who expresses herself with simple lines, bold colors and free flowing forms (www.fotographicallyyours.com). ”Through the art of photography I feel at peace with myself, expressing my emotions without the deception of words.”

According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, an audience can be “an opportunity of being heard” or “a group of listeners or spectators.” If you are developing a new photography project, it can only prosper if you have an audience, followers, and customers. You have to find the right buttons to push. Obviously you need a viable product to sell or you won’t be able to keep your audience’s attention.

Don’t Be Afraid Of High ISO on Modern DSLR Cameras

This article from our friends at Picture Correct is from Andrew S Gibson the author of Understanding EOS: A Beginner’s Guide to Canon EOS Cameras, which takes a simple approach to using your DSLR by exploring only the controls that you need to learn (such as Aperture priority) to create beautiful photos.

As the internet grows and grows, photography tutorials are becoming more and more abundant. All that information can be a good thing, but it can also create problems as it sometimes has the magical effect of turning one’s opinion to fact over time. Read around about digital photography and you will come across the ‘stock’ advice that some people give. Over time, this gets repeated until it becomes part of the conventional wisdom about photography.

One of these is in relation to ISO. The usual advice is to use the lowest ISO possible when you take a photo. There’s a good reason for this, as the image quality is always higher at lower ISOs than higher ones. But, what the authors don’t mention is that the quality at high ISOs on modern DSLR’s is now very good indeed.

How to Improve Your Cityscape Photographs

This article, from Light Stalking is full of valuable advice for taking photos of cityscapes, is by Jason Row, a British born travel photographer now living in Ukraine. You can follow him on The Odessa Files. He also maintains a blog chronicling his exploits as an Expat in the former Soviet Union.

A dramatic cityscape is one of the powerful images we have in photography. It can convey a sense of wonder, power and beauty, often all three together. In this article we are going to take a look at how to shoot cityscapes for best effect.

The Right Time, The Right Place

This well known idiom is very apt for shooting cityscapes. Along with other types of landscape photography, position, time and weather are the vital ingredients that can make or break a good cityscape.

Planning is everything, first you need to scout your location, then you need to analyze the route of the sun across your scene. As with much outdoor photography the best time to shoot a cityscape is during the Golden hours, however, big brightly light cities can also look awe inspiring during the Blue Hour, that hour after the sun sets when the sky is a deep, rich blue.

If you are shooting for instance a medieval city, you will want to shoot in the dawn or dusk light where the soft yellows will give the scene a timeless feel. If your scene is a more modern, dynamic place, the hour from sunset will be a great time to shoot, the last rays of light reflecting from the modern glass and steel edifices, and the neon lights punching into the darkening blue sky.

Back up or Die

Hey! Exciting news today. Rob and Lauren Lim, who run Photography Concentrate are proud to introduce their newest eBook called Backup or Die: How To Keep Your Photos Safe. Here's what it's all about!

Backup is something that many photographers don't give enough thought to - it's not nearly as fun as taking photos!

But here's the problem. Every hard drive you own will FAIL at some point. They are mechanical devices that wear out. And when that happens, any photos on that drive will be gone.

Are you prepared for that?

Unfortunately, hard drive failure is just one way that you could lose your photos. There are other threats lurking in the shadows! Data corruption, theft, disaster (like a dragon burning your house down!) and even simple human error (Uh oh, was I supposed to delete that?). The world is a scary place for photos!

Everyone Needs A Great Backup System
No matter what level of photographer you are, you need to keep your photos safe with a great backup system.

What makes a backup system solid? Well, you need to have 3 copies of your data, on 3 different hard drives, with 1 of those drives stored offsite (which means outside of your home).

That may sound hard to do, but it doesn't have to be! After many long nights of research, and years of trial and error, we figured it out...

We Discovered A Way To Keep Our Photos Safe, Without Doing Much Work At All

When you get Backup or Die, we'll show you how a simple file organization system makes it so much easier to back up your photos.

Then we'll teach you about the different types of backup. This is the key. You need more than one type to keep your photos safe!

You'll learn about the equipment behind a good system, and how to save money by not overpaying for fancy gear you don't need.

Plus you'll learn what software you can use to do most of the work for you!

But we'll make sure everything is both FUN and EASY to learn. You'll take baby steps so that you're never overwhelmed, and that way you'll learn faster.

The eBook is filled with gorgeous graphics and a thrilling fairy tale, to make it easy to understand and enjoyable to read!

It doesn't matter if you're Mac or PC, a brand new shooter or an established pro - this tutorial is designed for everyone!

Filled with helpful graphics and a thrilling fairy tale!

We'll Guide You Through Setup

The purpose of Backup or Die isn't just to teach you about backup - it's to help you actually create your own system! When it comes to keeping your photos safe, you have to implement what you learn!

So we'll guide you through the setup process, and show you a simple workflow to keep things running smoothly.

BONUS: Get 7 Worksheets To Help You Take Action

And to ensure that it's easy for you to create your own system, we've included 7 bonus worksheets that make it simple to figure out what you need to do to keep your photos safe! (A $30 value - Free!)

Behind the Action - exciting new e-book

Creating Adventure Imagery, Step by Step - A Guide by Dan Bailey

Look over the shoulder of a professional adventure photographer as he shows you exactly how each amazing shot was captured.

Do you ever look at your own photographs and wonder what that key is to take them to that next level? Where people will publish them and study them wondering how you were able to elevate the image to such a professional finish?

What is the Special Ingredient?

Many of us have a solid understanding of photography and our equipment, but lack that one special ingredient. But what is it?

Most of the best photographers in the world had a mentor, somebody who showed them how to grab that shot that elevates the finished product. Who let them look over their shoulder at every step of the process.

And that is what this special guide will help you get.

Read the thoughts of a veteran adventure photography expert as he reveals every step of the shooting process for each of 12 spectacular images – from concept through to execution and even into post-production. If you think that looking over the shoulder of a seasoned professional will help with your own photography (and who wouldn’t!?) then this is the guide you should be looking to get your hands on.

Nothing is left out.

So What Can You Expect From The Guide?

This 64 page downloadable guide will take you inside Dan’s head as he prepares, equips himself, sets up and executes each of 12 amazing photographs with full disclosure of everything. That means you get:

  • full camera settings
  • full gear list used in each shot
  • detailed descriptions of shooting setup
  • examples of rejected shots (this is very revealing)
  • how post processing was done on each shot
Light Stalking guides are well known for us expecting our photographers to give away EVERYTHING and Dan’s guide does not disappoint!

Behind The Action lays out the exact step-by-step process for 12 specific adventure and outdoor type images. Essentially, I take the reader along with me on a number of shoots and let them look over my shoulder as I scout the location, gauge the light, choose my equipment, come up with an approach, execute the final image and reflect on how it all went down. I even show you a number of outtakes so that you can follow along and see how the final shot eventually came about.
Behind the Action e-book

In short, Behind The Action is the closest thing you’ll ever get to actually being there on the shoot with me and watching me work. Honestly, I can’t think of a better way to teach you how to become a better photographer aside from bringing you on as an assistant. Even if you have a solid understanding of photography and equipment, this book will show you the nuts and bolts of how to put it all together when you’re out there on location and the dust is flying, the light is changing and your scene is quickly unfolding.

What's in the book
For each of the 12 images that’s featured inside the book, Dan details the following:
  • Concept: The basic idea behind the shoot & what I was hoping to achieve in a final shot.
  • Gear: An exact inventory of what gear was taken along with me and what gear was used.
  • Light: My assessment of the light and the challenges that each scene presented.
  • Approach: My own unique ideas on how I planned to tackle the shoot.
  • Execution: What ACTUALLY happened after all the planning.
  • Final Thoughts: Reflections on what went right and what went wrong.
  • Post Processing: Exact notations of how I adjusted the image in the digital darkroom.
  • Quick Tips: Thoughts and advice on how to get these kinds of results for yourself.

Stretched Canvas Prints
Bring your artwork to life with the texture and depth of a stretched canvas print.   Your image gets printed on premium canvas and then stretched on a wooden frame of 1.5" x 1.5" stretcher bars (gallery wrap) or 5/8" x 5/8" stretcher bars (museum wrap).   All stretched canvases ship within 2 - 3 business days and arrive "ready to hang" with pre-attached hanging wire, mounting hooks, and nails.

Metal Prints

Metal prints - England metal printsBring your artwork to life with the stylish lines and added depth of a metal print.   Your image gets printed directly onto a sheet of 1/16" thick aluminium. The aluminium sheet is offset from the wall by a 3/4" thick wooden frame which is attached to the back.

The wooden frame includes a hanging wire for easy mounting on your wall (see photo on the left).

Metal prints - England metal prints
All metal prints ship within 2 - 3 business days and arrive "ready to hang" with mounting hooks and nails.Metal prints are extremely durable.   They're lightweight.  They won't bend, and they're water resistant. The high gloss of the aluminium sheet complements the rich colours of any image to produce stunning results.

Acrylic Prints

Bring your artwork to life with the stylish lines and added depth of an acrylic print.   Your image gets printed directly onto the back of a 1/4" thick sheet of clear acrylic.

The image is the art - it doesn't get any cleaner than that!

All acrylic prints ship within 2 - 3 business days and arrive "ready to hang" with four aluminum mounting posts (Option #1) or hanging wire (Option #2).

England acrylic prints  The high gloss of the acrylic sheet complements the rich colors of   any image to produce stunning results.

There are two different ways to mount your acrylic print.

Acrylic prints   Option #1 (Mounting Posts) - Attach your print to your wall with four    aluminum mounting posts.   The cylindrical cap of each mounting post can be removed, allowing you to thread a small screw along the center axis of the of post and into the wall.   When you're finished, simply reattached each cap, and you're done.   The mounting posts act as stand-offs and keep your print separated from the wall by 1".   All of the required mounting hardware (i.e. posts, screws, and wall anchors) is included with your print.

Option #2 (Hanging Wire) - With this option, your acrylic print is attached to a 1/4" thick black board which has a wooden frame and hanging wire attached to the back.   There are no metal mounting posts at the corners.   Simply put a nail in your wall, hang your print from the hanging wire, and you're done.   Due to the thickness of the black board and mounting frame, your print is separated from the wall by 1.50"
