Photography Course

On Monday I went on a 1-2-1 photography course, ran by Gary Fooks of Fotocourses.co.uk. It was a very informative and enjoyable day, working with Gary and several of the photos I took have been posted on Flickr. Here is one of them.

Durdle Door by TonyKRO

Durdle Door is one of the most photographed landmarks along the Jurassic Coast. This rock arch in the sea was formed as a result of the softer rocks being eroded away behind the hard limestones, allowing the sea to punch through them. The name Durdle is derived from an Old English word thirl meaning bore or drill. Eventually the arch will collapse to leave a sea stack such as those that can be seen at Ladram Bay in East Devon.

Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, and Manual Mode

This article from Picture Correct gives basic but invaluable information to the new DSLR owner on the benefits of using the cameras settings instead of relying on auto all the time. It is written by Andrew Goodall who writes for http://www.naturesimage.com.au and is a nature photographer based in Australia. He manages a gallery in Montville full of landscape photography from throughout Australia.

Digital photography has given almost anyone with a camera the potential to become a creative photographer. These days even compact cameras offer features that once were only found on ‘serious’ SLR cameras.

The trouble is, most people who have grown up with point-and-shoot cameras have very little idea what these features are all about. After buying a good digital camera with the best intentions, they soon give up and switch to automatic.

Are the settings on your camera really so hard to understand? Of course not, but it can seem that way at the start, especially if they are not explained to you in simple terms you can understand.

One of the items covered in the article is the use of Aperture Priority to control depth of field. Here is an example of a photo I took recently where I set the aperture to F25, high enough to blur out the background but not too high to blur out the edge of the flower.

An Introduction to Bird photography

This article from Digital Photography School gives a great insight into the art of photographing birds. It is full of useful tips as well as showing some stunning bird photography. It is written by DPS guest contributor, Lithuanian Photographer Tadas Naujokaitis.

Birds are very interesting creatures, but it’s not so easy to photograph them. Wild birds usually don’t pose where you want and, moreover, it’s often difficult to get close enough to take quality pictures. But if you know some basics of bird photography, it becomes much easier to capture amazing moments of the birds’ life.

Windmill on Brill Common

These photos of Brill Windmill were taken on the evening of June 4th, 2013.

The present windmill on Brill Common in Buckinghamshire, was probably erected sometime in the 1680s. Although not quite the oldest windmill in England, it is one of the best preserved of the dozen or so 17th century post-mills still standing. A post-mill is a mill in which the whole structure revolves around a central post in order to face the wind.

How to Read Clouds as a Photographer – PictureCorrect

An interesting article from Picture Correct, showing you how to make the most out of cloud formations in your photography.

Having been a wedding photographer in Sydney for a few years, I’m continually amazed at how much my photography is dependent on weather conditions. What I have found more surprising, however,  is how much this has driven me to study weather patterns–clouds, in particular. In a sense, a good photographer is also a good meteorologist. Perhaps you haven’t given much thought to cloud patterns as a photographer. If so, this article is for you, and my goal is to persuade you to become a good meteorologist.

In an industry where art and texture are everything, you won’t want to miss the enormous spectre of the sky on your shoot. Growing in your ability to read the clouds will determine and enhance your shoot. As a photographer in Sydney, there are a few key clouds I encourage you to read and use to your visual advantage.
