Calendar Photo March 2015

I heard today that I have had an image selected for the March image in the 2015 calendar for a local courier company, Delivered of High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England.

It is the following image of Ludlow Castle showing the Great Hall and the Chapel of St Mary Magdalene with its circular Nave. The medieval castle is located in the town of Ludlow in Shropshire, England and was one of the first stone castles to be built in England, being constructed shortly after the Norman Conquest.

Previously I have had my photo of "Low Tide at Rye" used as the November image for 2012 and "Colourful Punts on the River Cherwell, Oxford" for June, 2013 in the same calendar.

If you would like a copy of the above image, it is available to purchase as original  Wall Art, in a variety of formats including stretched canvas, metal or acrylic prints, framed prints, or simply as standard prints for you to mount in your favourite picture frame. Fungi

At this time of year in England the fields and woods are full of a variety of fungi which I enjoy taking photos of. Unfortunately I have very little (none) idea about to identifying the different types and which are edible or highly poisonous!

So I will just post a few of my favourite images, without too much comment - I hope you enjoy.

The first two were a selection of mushrooms growing on a wooden bench on the towpath of the Grand Union Canal near to Stoke Bruerne, Northamptonshire, England.

The next four images were all taken in Shabbington Wood in Berkshire, England.

Balkan Butterflies

While on my Balkan cruise in August I found some time to photograph a few butterflies as well as the usual tourist attractions. Here are three that we saw in Vidin in Bulgaria.

Balkan Danube Cruise

Following on from the cruise I enjoyed at the end of August along the Danube from Budapest to Bucharest, here are four more of my images, the first three from Budapest, Hungary and the fourth something rather different, from Croatia.
Hungarian Parliament Building
Fine Art America                                  Photo4Me
The Hungarian Parliament building from the opposite bank of the Danube. The building stretches 268 meters in its length, along the Danube embankment. Ornamented with white neo-gothic turrets and arches, it forms the most outstanding landmark of the Pest side horizon. Statues of Hungarian monarchs and military commanders decorate the outer walls. The Chain Bridge can be seen in the background.
The Chain Bridge
Fine Art America                                  Photo4Me
The Chain Bridge, which can be seen in the background of the above image, ( officially the Széchenyi Chain Bridge) was the first permanent stone-bridge connecting Pest and Buda, and only the second permanent crossing on the whole length of the river Danube. At the time of its construction, it had the second-largest span in the world of any suspension bridge. It was designed by the English engineer William Tierney Clark who had previously used the same design on a smaller but identical bridge crossing the River Thames at Marlow.

Walking around the side streets of Budapest, I was surprised to come across this mural on a wall overlooking a car park:
Mural Of England V Hungary
Fine Art America                                  Photo4Me
A mural in the Hungarian capital of Budapest celebrating their famous 6-3 victory over England on 25 November 1953 to become the first foreign team to beat England at Wembley. At the time they were the world's number one ranked team, the Olympic champions and on a run of 24 games unbeaten.
Vukovar Memorial
Fine Art America                                  Photo4Me

After leaving Hungary we sailed down the Danube to the town of Vukovar in Croatia. Vukovar is a city in eastern Croatia. It has Croatia's biggest river port, located at the confluence of the Vuka River and the Danube and the population was 26,468 in the 2011 census.

This is an image of a bombed out house in the town, left like this as a memorial to the Serbo-Croatian war.

Vukovar was heavily damaged during the Croatian War of Independence when approximately 2,000 self-organised defenders defended the city for 87 days against approximately 36,000 Serbian troops supplemented with 110 vehicles and tanks and dozens of planes. The city suffered heavy damage during the siege and was eventually overrun.

The damage to Vukovar during the siege has been called the worst in Europe since World War II, drawing comparisons with the World War II–era Stalingrad.

Bridges of Budapest

On my recent visit to Budapest, I took these images of the three oldest bridges linking Buda and Pest across the River Danube - the Chain Bridge, the Margaret Bridge and the Liberty Bridge.

Margaret Bridge was the second permanent bridge of Budapest, an example of French Neo-Baroque bridge-building. Its construction was started twenty years after the inauguration of the Chain Bridge, being built between 1872 and 1876.  It connects Szent István Boulevard and Margit Boulevard, also touching the Margaret Island. Its length is 607 meters and it is 25 meters wide. It contains four traffic lanes (two in each direction), two tramway lines in the middle and one pavement on each side.

Liberty Bridge is the third and shortest bridge of Budapest. It was built for the Millennium World Exhibition in 1896, held to celebrate 1,000 years since the arrival of the Magyars in Hungary and its original name was the Francis Joseph Bridge. It was renamed the Liberty Bridge to mark Hungary's liberation after World War Two. It is a three-span girder bridge with a Gerber truss built in Art Nouveau style. It is 333.6 meters in length, 20.1 meters in width.

Images of Budapest

Have just returned from a river cruise along the River Danube, sailing from Budapest in Hungary through to Bucharest in Romania. As you would expect, I have well over 1,000 photos to sort out, and here are three of the ones taken at the start of the trip, in Budapest, which I hope you will enjoy.

Imre Nagy was Prime Minister of Hungary on two occasions. His second term was during the revolution in 1956, and it ended when his non-Soviet-backed government was brought down during the failed Hungarian Revolution. He was tried and executed in 1958, and buried in an unmarked grave. His name could not to be mentioned during Communism, but he became a symbol of freedom. In 1989, he was reburied. A crowd of 200,000 gathered at Heroes' Square for the funeral. His statue, facing the Parliament Building, is located on a tiny square next to Kossuth Square.

NEW Exposure Blending eCourse - FREE Download

A couple of months ago we told you abut an e-book written by Christopher O'Donnell, a leading landscape photographer from Maine, New England.  In the step-by-step guide, Christopher discussed the entire process of exposure blending by detailing his personal workflow – from auto-bracketing in the field, to combining different exposures in process. It can help you take your own landscape photography to the next level.

Christopher has now released a major update to his free Exposure Blending eBook. He has completely redesigned the eBook, added a lot of new content, and also created video tutorials to walk readers through the Photoshop steps (which can be very difficult without some visuals). The image files used are also included in the download, so it's now an eCourse rather than simply an eBook.  It includes a 100+ page eBook, 8 videos, and 7 image files to guide you step-by-step through the entire bracketing and blending process.

You can get this FREE Exposure Blending eCourse which will teach you everything you need to know about autobracketing and blending exposures in Adobe® Photoshop.

To get your own free copy, simply click here and then subscribe to Christopher's email list ( you can always unsubscribe anytime you want to).

Spinnaker Tower is a 170-metre (560 ft) landmark tower in Portsmouth, England, UK. It is the centrepiece of the redevelopment of Portsmouth Harbour. The tower was opened on 18 October 2005 and the Spinnaker Tower is taller than the London Eye, Blackpool Tower and Big Ben.

Tripod Buying Guide

Need a new tripod? Perhaps you’re not sure what to look for? This complete tripod buying guide, courtesy of WEX Photographic, explains all the options to help you find the best one for your particular style of shooting.

Tripods can often be a much-overlooked item in the photographer’s arsenal. So simple in design – essentially, they comprise just three adjustable legs and a method of attaching a camera to the top of a centre column – yet there are many times when using one can mean the difference between securing a great shot and missing a golden opportunity altogether. In this respect, tripods should be treated just like any other item of camera gear – i.e. you should choose wisely when purchasing and, with frequent use, understand how to get the best out of them, specific to your requirements.

From the outset, there is one simple fact which you should be aware of: not all tripods are made equal. Yes, they all share a series of common basic features but this can be where the similarities end. From price to build quality, weight to portability, picking the right model for you is a process best approached with a little research.

In this guide, I’m going to give you a basic overview of what’s out there. Of course, not all designs and specifications will suit every photographer (or their budget), but there will be something that is right for you. With a little thought and some pre-purchase fact-finding, you can be sure of spending your money wisely when the time comes to invest in a sturdy tripod.

To read the full guide, follow this link to the WEX Photography Blog.

If you are looking to buy a tripod or monopod, and are based in the UK or European Union, find the perfect one for you at the WEX Photographic selection of video and photography tripods by Manfrotto, Gitzo, Giottos, Slik and Velbon. Whether it needs to be aluminium or carbon, lightweight or professional heavy duty, they have 'the' tripod for you!

Views of Tenerife

Visited Tenerife for the first time last month and really enjoyed the volcanic scenery. Here are some of my photos from there.

My favourite trip was to the Teide National Park. Mount Teide is the largest mountain in Spain and the third largest volcano in the world,  reaching to a height of 3,718 m above sea level and 7,500 m above the ocean floor.

The park has an area of 18,990 hectares and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and apart from Mount Teide itself, it is renowned for the geology of its volcanic rocks. Here are three more images which I think show the coloured layers of the rock to full effect.
