River Ropotamo Nature Reserve, Bulgaria

A selection of photos taken at Ropotamo Nature Reserve in Bulgaria.

The reserve was established in 1940 to protect the marshlands and the largest sand dunes in Bulgaria and in 1992 it was broadened and declared a reservation with a total area of 1,000.7 ha. The site is home to a variety of rare plants, snakes and turtles and over 200 species of bird. White tailed eagles can sometimes be spotted on the rock formations above the river.

Part of the reservation is the famous rock formation “The lions head”.
