Featured Artist - Derrick Rathgeber.

This is the first post in a new series, where we give artists and photographers the opportunity to tell us about themselves and their work. We start with Derrick the Artist.

My name is Derrick Rathgeber, and I am a Colored Pencil Artist.

I have been an artist for as long as I can remember. As a child I found myself finding anything and everything to draw and doodle on. From receipts to brown grocery bags, nothing was off limits. I would lose myself into my imagination by creating characters, cool creatures, and even whole worlds for them to live in.

As I grew older I wanted to learn how to make my characters look more realistic, and make the world they live in come alive. I couldn’t afford lessons, and I didn’t have a mentor so I watched and studied cartoons, and animated movies. When kids were watching them for entertainment, I was trying to figure out how they worked. I was enamored with artwork coming to life. I wanted to do that.

In the year 2000 I got an opportunity to attend Collins College. There I had my chance to learn how to do real life animation. It was one of the greatest and most difficult times of my life. On one hand I got to learn from a legend that worked on several Don Bluth films, and on the other hand the world of traditional animation has been lost to computer animation. I graduated with my Bachelor’s Degree in 2005, and decided to move back towards family with my newly wedded wife, and our daughter.

With new experiences as a father and husband, I started to draw more pictures of things that reminded me of them like fairies, flowers, and animals. These are drawings that I don’t think I would have drawn had not for being inspired by them. Over time I found that I really found that I had a talent for capturing the colors of the world.

I am now 31 years old with four great children and art has become a large part of our lives. My wife writes great poetry and each of my kids has a knack for coloring and drawing fantastic pictures. My oldest daughter has this uncanny ability to craft objects like her mom. We enjoy creating things as a family.

I now have the opportunity of sharing my work with you, and teach you everything I know one post at a time. I will bring you step by step lessons that will show you how to use each color pencil in your arsenal to add color and imagination to your life no matter your level as an artist. I have also started a comic strip series which is also available on my blog along with the free art lessons. Come for the Art, and stay for the great stories.

“Let us make this world full of art and creativity together.”

Garden Bird Photography Tips

Today's article from Picture correct gives six valuable tips for taking photographs of birds in your garden. It is written by Wayne Turner who has been teaching photography for 25 years and has written three books on photography. He has produced 21 Steps to Perfect Photos; a program of learner-based training using outcomes based education.

The great thing about photographing garden birds is that it’s much easier than going out to a reserve or park, and therefore much simpler for beginners. When starting out with bird photography, you want to minimize expensive equipment until you know that you enjoy it and are capable enough to pursue it.

Bird photography at home can be as simple as sitting in a lounge chair and firing away until you get your shot. But really, you will get as much out of your photography as you put into it. So careful planning is going to go a long way in getting those beautiful shots, even if it is in your own garden. Here are the basics of getting into garden bird photography.

Follow this link to read the six tips for Garden Bird Photography.
Here are a couple of my attempts at photographing birds in my own garden - as usual they are available to buy in a variety of formats, from a beautiful stretched canvas print or acrylic print to an iphone case or greeting card at Fine Art America or Photo4Me.

The Art of Color Processing: A Guide to Creative Development in the Digital Darkroom

This is a new e-book by professional coastal landscape photographer Christopher O’Donnell.

After college, he returned to the coast of Maine to pursue his love of landscape photography and have made it his career. Maine is one of the few states that is relatively untouched by human interference, which makes it the perfect landscape.

In The Art of Color Processing: A Guide to Creative Development in the Digital Darkroom, Christopher explains his color processing workflow in a step-by-step fashion, guiding you through each stage from start to finish. In addition to learning the details of his processing, he also discusses the history of his creative development and what led him to discover his own techniques. These important milestones in his photography can direct you towards the development of your own unique color workflows, and provide the key to unlocking the full potential of your creative connection for unlimited possibilities.

What’s Inside
This eBook is divided into three sections, with each contributing an important part to not only learning Christopher's colour processing workflow, but also how to develop your own techniques in the digital darkroom.

Section 1 discusses his philosophy on digital processing and the steps that led to the development of his color workflow. You will have your own path to travel in your creative journey. By learning how his techniques came to fruition, you can identify some key turning points while also shedding some light on any potential obstacles.

Sections 2 and 3 explain the specific workflows of Christopher's editing and color processing in a step-by-step format. He discusses his techniques and why he chose them, and you can see the evolution of his images from RAW format to the final presentation using screenshots from Adobe® Photoshop CS6 software for visual instruction.

FREE Complimentary eBook

Also included is a complimentary 30+ page eBook on exposure blending, which is a method Christopher uses to achieve a proper exposure. Processing in the digital darkroom will be more successful when you capture the entire tonal range of a scene, and this free guide will show you how to achieve the best possible image – from auto-bracketing in the field, to combining different exposures in Photoshop CS6.

The Abbey of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, is the second largest parish church in the country and a former Benedictine monastery. It is one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in Britain, and has probably the largest Romanesque crossing tower in Europe.

Tewkesbury Medieval Festival is widely regarded as the largest free medieval gathering of its kind in Europe, the central attraction is a re-enactment of the Battle of Tewkesbury, on part of the site of the original 1471 battlefield. Many of the participants including wives and children live as a medieval army in authentic medieval encampments for the whole weekend.

The Battle of Tewkesbury, which took place on 4 May 1471, was one of the decisive battles of the Wars of the Roses. The forces loyal to the House of Lancaster were completely defeated by those of the rival House of York under King Edward IV. The Lancastrian heir to the throne, Edward, Prince of Wales, and many prominent Lancastrian nobles were killed during the battle or were dragged from sanctuary two days later and immediately executed. The Lancastrian King, Henry VI, who was a prisoner in the Tower of London, died or was murdered shortly after the battle. Tewkesbury restored political stability to England until the death of Edward IV in 1483.

The historic Victorian docks in Gloucester are a unique and inspiring destination, described by Charles Dickens himself as ‘extraordinary’, and granted port status by Queen Elizabeth I in 1580, Gloucester is the most inland port in Britain, and the docks are dominated by towering Victorian warehouses which stand proud along the water’s edge. The former dock estate provides a remarkably complete example of a Victorian port. Views include many fine late Victorian era warehouses, 2 working dry docks a Mariners Chapel and other dock-related buildings that have been found new uses.

The Mariners' Chapel in the centre of the main docks area of Gloucester Docks was built by public subscription and opened in 1849. The chaplain welcomed seamen visiting Gloucester, often going on board ships to spread the word of God, and he also cared for the interests of local boatmen and dockers. The building is still used for worship by a small congregation of local people, and it is usually open to visitors during the day.
