Britain from A to Z - P

We continue our A to Z tour of Britain with the letter P, where we start in London, with the Palace of Westminster, travel along the south coast to Portsmouth, up to Pinkneys Green in Maidenhead and then take a look at Punts in Oxford and Cambridge.

Palace of Westminster
The Palace of Westminster is the meeting place of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, the two houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Commonly known as the Houses of Parliament after its tenants, the Palace lies on the Middlesex bank of the River Thames in the City of Westminster, in central London.

Portsmouth - The Spinnaker Tower
The Spinnaker Tower is a 170-metre (560 ft) landmark tower in Portsmouth, England, UK. It is the centrepiece of the redevelopment of Portsmouth Harbour. The tower, designed by local firm HGP Architects and the engineering consultants Scott Wilson and built by Mowlem, reflects Portsmouth's maritime history by its being modeled after a sail. The tower was opened on 18 October 2005 and the Spinnaker Tower is taller than the London Eye, Blackpool Tower and Big Ben.

A punt is a flat-bottomed boat, typically used in small rivers and canals, and is particularly associated with the students of Oxford and Cambridge Universities. It is propelled by pushing the river bed with a long pole. There is a difference between the punts used in the two cities. In Cambridge the punter is balanced on a flat wooden platform, whereas in Oxford, where the punts are shaped slightly differently, the correct position is to stand on the slatted decking in the punt.
